Create Systems for the Future

Difference between goals and systems 🔑

As explained by James Clear in Atomic Habits, a goal is a result you want to achieve; a system is a process that lead to those results.

As the saying goes, “life isn’t about the destination, it’s about the journey.” Goals are hyper-focused on the destination, while systems are embracing the journey.

For example, if your space is a mess, you’d set a goal to clean it. Once you accomplish that goal, the result you get is a clean room. Temporarily. Until it’s messy again, as your habits of not putting things back where they belong haven’t changed.

The outcome, or output, will always be the same because the system, or input, didn’t change. It’s like treating a symptom, slapping on a bandaid, not addressing the real cause.

All that to say, if we’re able to fix the inputs, the outputs will fix themselves. Ready to set some systems?

⓿ My Values & Intentions

Quick refresher of what your values & intentions are before turning them into systems

My Values

ValuesIntentions:

➊ Turn Intentions into Systems

Create a system, or habit, for each value. For example (expand):
  • Value: 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family
    • Intention: I want to do a better job keeping in touch with my parents
    • System: Call my parents on Thursdays during my commute home
  • Value: 🧘‍♀️ Mental health
    • Intention: I want to be more present with myself (meditate consistently)
    • System: Meditate first thing when I wake up each day for 10 min
  • Value: 🪴 Personal growth
    • Intention: I'd like to keep myself accountable for my 2022 goals
    • System: Conduct a review every month
